Heroines

As part of this year's Annual RIBA Festival, Morag Rose of The LRM (Loiterers Resistance Movement) will explore 100 years of Manchester's modernist heroines.  The walk takes inspiration from ten remarkable women with connections to Manchester. Whilst celebrating their achievements, the walk also uncovers hidden histories and power relationships which have shaped the modern city.

So please join us for tales of explorers, scientists, geographers, aviatrixes, architects, artists and more to reveal the valuable role of Mancunian and Lancastrian women in defining, and more often than not, resisting dominant perspectives of the city.

The walk will followed by a discussion hosted at the Manchester Modernist Society.  Both events are hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University.

The event starts at 2pm at Ken Yasuda's Touchstone sculpture located at the main entrance of the Bridgewater Hall.

The intitial walk should last around 2 hours and will conclude at the Manchester Modernist Society on Chapel Street, Salford, where the Society will host an informal discussion, with light refreshments, with a view to ending around 6pm.   Both events form part of on ongoing collaborative project between the LRM, The Manchester Modernist Society, and The Shrieking Violet who in early 2011, teamed up to explore the stories of ten fabulous North West women spanning the fields of invention, aviation, media, science, design and architecture throughout the 20th century and into the 21st.
